What Is The Best Flash Player To Use When Running Xubuntu?
Xubuntu is Ubuntu’s XFCE version of the distribution. Typically, it is designed for older hardware as most people will use KDE or Gnome on more modern and up to date machines. There are also some people who just love XFCE simply for what it is. One of the most commonly asked questions in regard to Xubuntu is which flash player to use.
There actually are a few options when it comes to flash players. There is Adobe’s flash player as well as a number of open source players. Many ask which one is best to use because they are expecting one to work perfectly, but sadly this might not be the case. However, you can’t blame Xubuntu because it has nothing to do with what distribution you are using.
In general, you will find that the open source flash players do not work as well. They tend to be uncompleted projects that were started here and there and just aren’t to the point of full acceptance because the quality doesn’t meet the needs of the users.
Adobe’s flash player for Linux is pretty good overall, but is still somewhat lacking. The big issue is the full screen flickering that happens while watching flash within a browser window. This may be the best available option, but it still does not live up to one’s expectations.
Overall, there are not many great options available right now. The first option is to wait for Adobe or an open source flash player to improve their performance. The second is to wait for HTML5 which will be coming out soon and has the ability to replace flash on many sites. The HTML5 standards that many have agreed upon are going to move away from the total dependency on flash as much as possible giving Xubuntu or Linux users other options to choose from.
Many wonder what the best flash player is for Xubuntu. There are the open source varieties as well as Adobe’s flash player to choose from, but the best is definitely yet to come.
Google Docs to dethrone MS Office with HTML5 integration
Google Inc, the search giant has recently updated its Google Docs using a new javascript layout engine and HTML5 to enhance and speed up the document, drawing and spreadsheet editors in the application. Google Docs is a free, Web-based word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, form, and data storage service that will compete with Microsoft Office or IBM Lotus applications.
The search giant said that it is temporarily removing its Google Gears offline support for Docs beginning May 3; however, Google claims that it will not affect the performance of the app. Meanwhile, the company will improve the offline functionality through HTML5-based Web browser technologies. It is predicted that the company is pitching today’s office workers, who generally uses MS Office suite.
Docs’ documents load faster and offer auto-complete, drag and drop columns, and easier navigation for quick working. The company will also launch drawings editor along with new changes.
Microsoft Office 2010
Earlier this week, the software giant has released the Office 2010′s RTM and will launch the suite to business customers at an event on 12 May. Rest of the world can have the new suite in the month of June. To counter the challenge from Google Docs, Microsoft has included Web-based versions of its most commonly used applications, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote for the first time. It will be available in 64-bit version, however only for Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating system. Office 2010 is not supported on Windows XP Professional x64 Edition.
Google Docs: New initiatives
Last month, the company had acquired DocVerse, an online document collaboration company, which permits multiple online users to work on Microsoft Office compatible document formats such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. It seems that the search giant will also use the technology in its Google Docs.
Further, the company wants to offer team collaboration where users can access office documents on the web, whether they were formed in Google Docs, or MS Office or Lotus Notes. It seems that the company wants to offer real time workability to its solutions. It is reported that new javascript layout engine can handle as many as 50 real-time users in each drawing, spreadsheet and presentation document. Earlier, users have to wait in a queue for doing changes.
The company has also added sidebar chat feature along with Doc so that users can discuss about the changes, which are now visible character by character. The search giant has also introduced import and export fidelity between its Docs and MS Office without losing ant data.
Cost difference
Today, various cloud based document-sharing services require user fees, however Google Docs are available for free. Enterprises are increasingly adopting the services due to its enhanced sharing features and accessibility. In contrast, MS Office suite will be costlier than all other options available. There will be three editions of Microsoft Office 2010 viz. Office Home and Student, Office Home and Business and Office Professional, which would be priced as £109.99, £239.99 and £429.99, respectively in UK.

HTML5 Web Workers Simple pool of workers
Within this example, the browser would develop a pool of workers and delivering the command to every workerand begin the task. not so difficult, you may still find many complication coming, stay tune.
var workers = new Array(5);
// creating a pool of workers
for(var i=0; i<5; ++i) {
workers[i] = new Worker('worker001.js');
// getting the message from the worker
workers[i].onmessage = function(event) {
}
}
for(var i=0; i<5; ++i) {
// sending the message to the worker
workers[i].postMessage(i);
}
and here is code of the worker001.js
var ID = null;
onmessage = function(event) {
ID = event.data;
postMessage('worker: ID ('+ID+') assigned and start to run');
}
nevertheless, when you look into the implementation of the chrome, you will find it is a separate process!

Working with HTML5 Web Workers to have background computational capability
When carrying out superior load-heavy functions in a web browser, both the web page it is run in as well as the web browser User interface turns into unresponsive till it’s completed. But, there’s a method to handle that with HTML5 Web Workers.
What HTML5 Web Workers do
Fundamentally, Web Workers provides you a chance to load a JavaScript file dynamically and then have it process scri[t in a background process, not affecting the user interface and its response level. You can continue to do whatever you want, selecting thing, clicking etc, while all Web Worker computation influences background.
Working with HTML5 Web Workers
First, you create a Worker object. Then you can certainly send text data to it with a postMessage method, it can send information back with its own postMessage and both of them have onmessage event handlers to receive data. For instance, here there is a simple example where you send in some data to a Web Worker, have it do 1 000 000 iterations in a loop, and continually post the current value back:
In the web page
// Creates a Web Worker
var worker = new Worker("worker.js");
// Posts a message to the Web Worker
worker.postMessage(0);
// Triggered by postMessage in the Web Worker
worker.onmessage = function (evt) {
// evt.data is the values from the Web Worker
alert(evt.data);
};
// If the Web Worker throws an error
worker.onerror = function (evt) {
alert(evt.data);
};
In the Web Worker JavaScript file
// Triggered by postMessage in the page
onmessage = function (evt) {
// evt.data will be 0 here from the above postMessage
for (var i=evt.data, il=1000001; i<il; i++) {
// Continually sends data back
postMessage(i);
};
};
In addition to the postMessage method and the onmessage event used above, there is a handy terminate method on the Worker object, to instantly stop all of its work.
This demo and complete code comes in the HTML5 Web Worker Demo page, which is part of my HTML5 – Information and samples for HTML5 and related APIs playground.
Web Browser support
So far, Web Workers are supported in Firefox 3.5 and Safari 4, and soon upcoming in Google Chrome.
Issues
This is quite nice for heavy operations. However, there are to main issues related to the terminate method:
Firefox and execution of terminate
As you have seen in the HTML5 Web Worker Demo, in Firefox, if you click on the “Stop Worker” button, it isn’t actually called till the previous ongoing operation is finished. To me, this practically renders it useless since the whole idea of the terminate method should really be instant, and which appears to be the idea according to the Mozilla Web Worker documentation for terminate():
So that you can immediately terminate a running worker, you can do so by calling the worker’s terminate() method… The worker thread is killed immediately without a chance to complete its operations or clean up after itself.
My take is that this is a bug, and I will talk to Mozilla about this.
Can’t restart a terminated Web Worker
In both Firefox and Safari, if you have called the terminate method on a Web Worker, there’s no way to get it started again by calling postMessage on it. Instead, you should reinstantiate the Worker with the new Worker(“filename.js”) again, which sort of defeats the idea of pausing/playing a Worker’s action. I don’t know if this describes due to design or implementation, but if you craft your code cleverly, you can work around this.
Spreading the load
Despite the issues I think Web Workers are great, and they could prove fantastic with regards to relieving the user interface from being frozen when having to do complex calculations and similar.
